I have an asrock 939dual-sata2 motherboard. Right now i have an AMD 64 3000+ in it(not X2).
The motherboard supports AM2, via i think an extension slot(which kind of looks like a PCI slot) What is my best option to upgrade? I have Vista and its slow and it says because of the processor mostly. Is it possible to replace the proc without reinstalling Vista? what should i go with? i want dual core and something like 5000mhz. anybody sells processors with and 939 extension adapter bundled? i dont want to reinstall vista.. Will i need to update the BIOS too? I bought my computer is March 2006 i think.. =============
finding a cheap 939 socket x2 processor will be easier than tracking down the am2 extension for your board. by 5000mhz i'm assuming you're referring to the x2 5000+ am2. it actually runs at 2.6ghz. the fastest 939 socket chip is the fx60 which also runs at 2.6ghz but will be very expensive. processor speed is not the most important thing when running vista. the amount of system memory does. you will not have to reinstall vista if you upgrade to a faster 939 socket cpu. you need to look up the support page for your board to see if a bios update is necessary to accept a dual core 939. =============
I know Newegg has a few Socket 939 Opterons, but they are all over $100. If you feel like this is acceptable upgrade the chip and then get more ram. =============
where can i get that am2 adapter for cheap? and if i do get the adapter that mean i probably will have to reinstall windows, am i right? =============
The AM2CPU board is for sale here:

.... you would have to have an updated BIOS with AM2 support, and probably a fresh OS install as well. =============
you'll also need ddr2 ram. =============
I'm using an AM2CPU board on an ASRock 939SLI32-eSATA with a 3600+ Brisbane and 2GB OCZ Plat Rev.2 DDR800.... and it's working just fine for me. It's kind of a fun rig to have, but I don't know if I would say that it's the best upgrade path. =============
did you have to update the bios? if not how old was your bios on the motherboard, it sohuld say the date when it boots. I could go for it now, the only thing stopping me is i dont want to reinstall vista.. =============
I did have to update the BIOS since my board had the original 1.00 version that didn't even support the AM2 board yet. And I didn't have a 939 CPU or DDR ram anymore, so I had to order a chip with the 1.40 BIOS to be able to even use it. But once I got things straightened out, it went pretty well. I'm not sure about having to reinstall Vista.... you could maybe get by without, but I wouldn't guarantee it.
There is a lot of good ASRock info over at OC Workbench.... they have a section devoted strictly to ASRock boards.... you might want to check it out. Good luck! =============
great community forum at ocworkbench that loves and supports these asrock boards...

you'll need to flash to bios 2.31c (from ocworkbench), get the am2 board (30$ from ewiz), and a am2 proc(85$ for 5000+), and regular voltage (1.8 or 1.9v) ddr2 ram (2gb for about 50$).
I have this motherboard and am2cpu board, and a 5000+ overclocked to 3GHz, it's like winginit said, a fun rig, but probably not the best upgrade path. i run vista business 64bit, no slowdowns.
interesting tidbit for current asrock 939dual and 939sli owners... that forum above has a beta bios for phenom support on the am2 board! =============
wow, thats an awesome freakenstein board!! =============
