Hi, I'm going to be buying a new Intel CPU. I know the new quad cores are coming out in March, but I kinda need something right now. (Maybe I'll that later on) So should I get the Q6600 or the E8400? Please give me pros and cons if you can. Any comments are appreciated. Thank you! =============
This is the way I see it.
The E8400 is faster than the Q6600. If you are doing a ton of multitasking, etc.. then the Q6600 is your best bet. If the majority of what you are doing is gaming then I suggest the E8400 (it's cooler too). By the time games utilize (if ever) quad cores your CPU will be so out of date that you will be buying a new CPU anyway. =============
So there aren't really any games that utilize quad core right now? (Except for Crysis, right?) Also, you're saying that there aren't any game developers that will utilize quad core in the near future? I'm just trying to make sure with this purchase, so please, be patient with me. =============

I don't think Crysis even supports Quad Cores....I believe their latest patch allows them to fully utilize dual-cores....I would go with the E8400...Overclock it and you should be seeing yields of up to 4Ghz on air... =============
Crysis is GPU limited not CPU. You would see about the same results on a dual to a quad. =============
Thanks for the posts! Looks like I will be getting an e8400. Last question. What is a pretty nice (air) cooler for this CPU? Also, a good motherboard and ram for overclocking and it MUST be stable. I've had some good overclocking motherboards that weren't always stable. =============
If you want the best air cooling, go with the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme (TRUE). You're going to find fans of all the major P35-based motherboards - pretty much pick the one that has the features you want and go with it. The Abit IP35 Pro, Gigabyte P35-DS3R or DS4, Abit P5K (or is it E, I forget which one is P35) are all good choices. The Abits currently have issues with the E8400 (temp reading mostly) but a BIOS update should fix that soon. Newegg has a good deal on some G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2-1000 that seems popular. =============
