I am wondering if it's time to upgrade...
I have a 27" Sony Wega Tube TV for 3 years. The picture quality on it was ideal, I have the TV in the bedroom and have Comcast coax plugged into the back. I also got all the channels for some reason. This TV is not HD - but it served its purpose for watching TV as you fall asleep, and then having the timer wake you up in the morning.
Yesterday - I was watching TV when all of a sudden the bottom portion of the TV changed. It's hard to describe the problem, but here goes... when you change the channel - the channel indicator is at the top right of the screen... the color of the channel indicator is green.
When you change the volume, the volume indicator is on the bottom of the TV (pretty much like any other TV)... the color of this used to be green as well - now it's red! When you look at people's hands, when the hands are located in the bottom 1/3 or 1/4 area of the TV - the hands look red, or very pale, but when the actor brings their hands up to a higher area of the screen - the hands look normal color. I plugged in a ps2 and watched a dvd - same issue. I changed the moves (video1, video2) and changed the volume - and it's red on all modes... so this can't be a comcast issue. I thought I was a little buzzed last night so I went to sleep, but when I checked again - I see the same issue.
Any ideas if this is fixable? The TV cost $400 3 years ago, and if this is something I can fix I would prefer to fix, but if not - I guess it's time to upgrade to a 32" 720P TV for the bedroom? ;)
The current TV is similar to this one:

It's probably fixable. Try and find a reputable repair shop in your area.
Sounds like an electronics problem, not a problem with the tube.

I had a Sony 27" XBR that had similar issues. There is a circuit board on the bottom of the TV and the back of the tube and where those 2 boards connect the solder points are weak and over time break down. I would get all types of differnet screen corruption like you described and eventually it was a black screen with just the channel in the corner. If I rocked the TV front to back(sometimes vigorously if the basketball game was starting) the screen would clear up for a while. I ended up buying a new TV and it had some issues so a repairman came to my house to fix my new TV and then saw my old one and asked what was wrong with it. After explaining the issues it was having he told about the weak solder points and fixed it for $50 bucks(20 minutes) because he was already there for the other repair(i'm sure he pocketed the $50). Anyway my suggestion is to get a nice 32" 702p LCD. What an amazing difference. Just make sure whatever TV you get has a QAM tuner so you can get some HD channels off of Comcast for free. The only downside other than the price of the TV is that you'll want to get the HD cable package!! lol
Good Luck
