I want to turn one of my old computers into a computer my kid can use. I'll put it in our computer room and my criteria is:
1. Under $100
2. Don't want it to look junky
3. Best display color for the price
4. Around 17" =============
I'm sorry, a new LCD monitor for under a $100 doesn't exist. The cheapest of cheap TN panels are at least sub-$200
Your best bet is used. Try Craiglist. =============
Well, what have you looked at so far that would be a consideration? We're not here to be your personal shopper, ya know? ;)
Frankly, I think <$100 for a decent 17" LCD is a bit unrealistic.
Perhaps you could try your local craigslist or such for something used. If you're willing to settle for a used CRT, shouldn't be a problem.
Edit: lobski, you beat me to the punch. :p =============
Let's say I raised the budget to under $200?
Sorry, not trying to skimp completely on doing personal research. ;) I've actually been at the computer all day (avoiding my in-laws, but, all the same...) researching away for bigger displays.
I've been looking at the Dell 17" and a few others, but in that catagory it seems there's a lot of no-name brands popping up for cheap prices. Just wondering if there's one that stands out from the bunch. I'll try and post some more examples later for ideas.
Guess Craig's list isn't a bad idea either. =============
I recently acquired a 19" Acer AL1917W from my husband's uncle who got it as part of a laptop bundle and I'm pretty happy with it as my first wide-screen LCD after having used CRTs. I see Newegg has Acers in the <$200 price range.
But if used/CRT is an option, then definitely craigslist locally so you don't have to pay shipping on a heavy item. I don't think many stores even offer CRTs these days. =============
Why not just pick up a 19" or so CRT? Easy to find decent ones for $20.
Or do you not want your kid to have a better looking monitor than your LCD? ;) =============
Try Dell's refurb store (dfs direct - or something similiar). I got my dual 17" PVA 1703FP for 125 (shipping and tax included). =============

Not a bad idea right there. I'll check the outlet out now.
I actually have a pretty decent 19" CRT (kind of dying tho) but I'm trying to replace my fat box CRTs around the house. Most of them aren't in top shape anyway, so I'm thinking a decent LCD will look better, be easier to fit in the room and be in newer shape. =============
Hit up craigslist or kijiji. I saw a 17" lcd go for $30 on my local kjiji site yesterday. Had I seen it in time I would have bought it even though I don't really need it -- who could pass up a deal like that? :) =============
What about eBay? :) =============
