Epic is hoping to finish up Unreal Tournament 2007 and release it alongside Gears of War. That makes the game a Q1 - Q2 2006 release, which might even make it a PS3 launch title, if that ever gets officially confirmed.
I also like that they are making it more like UT Classic (my favourite) but I wish they'd keep Assault. =============
Nice, I hope there is cheap HW which can play it by then, a Celerom+7200(class) meybe, let me dream a bit. =============
With 2007 we're trying to take things back to UT 99. Woot! 8-) =============
hehe UT99!?
I've newer heard of that game! :)
BTW
I hate disproportion of guns and player models :|
It look nice... =============
unreal 2k7 and gears of war within a few months of each other on my x360 ? My god what am i going to do =============
Has it really been confirmed that GoW is coming out Q1-Q2? If UT2007 is to be released at that time, why is it still called 2007? Until Epic confirms the release date themselves, I'll take this speculation with a grain of salt. (Wasn't it just earlier this year that they said they'd hardly started on the game?)
Not that I wouldn't want to see it come out earlier (I liked 2004, and I thought the original UT was excellent, still the best of the three IMO), but this just doesn't seem likely. =============
Hmmm... I'd really like to see them go back to their roots. Whenever I have a LAN we always seem to gravitate back to UT rather than one of the newer versions. Same goes with Quake2. I think the only new game we're adding to our list is Flatout. =============
YES.
UT '99 was by far the best UT, no doubt about it. Thank you for the news, my faith in Epic has been renewed. =============
Agreed. It was a mistake for them to move gameplay and graphics style towards Quake 3 Arena in 2003. Because of that it partially lost the unique gameplay that the 1999 version had. Although one of the CTF maps in 2003 was brilliant and my favorite so far. Don't remember the name, but the structures had some hellish stone and metal look. With two towers on two floating stone platforms, connected by 3 bridges. Two lower ones on the sides and one upper in the middle. Anyone knows the name? =============

For the sake of record there is no such a game called Unreal Tournament 1999!
I found it funny that at Epic did not mentioned UT2003 at Games Convention 2005 in Leipzig. That was, after all cornerstone of the UT series, and the first game to have year in its name!

UT 2K7 looks nice, but I just can’t help not to notice those extremely disproportionably big guns and rifles in compare to player models. It just doesn’t look nice =============

I think Epic didn't want to be accused of just rehashing UT with better graphics. Once they made decisions like the new movement modes, that affected all kinds of other things, like scale of maps, moving speed, field of view, etc. Once they tied themselves into that for UT2003, they were tied into it for UT2004.
That's not to say things like Onslaught are not incredibly fun, and a real step forwards, but Epic also made quite a few backwards steps too. I actually like UT2004, and think it's a great game, but it doesn't have that massive support and shine of genius that UT did for it's time. =============

if this all is true, i cant wait for it.... =============

Well, you can bet Assault will be back for UT2008. That is, unless their new game mode effectively takes the place of Assault (forget the new game mode's name...). =============

Heh, I think Epic has worn out that excuse.

Conquest? Hmm I'll believe it when I see it. As of now, I think Quake Wars will be the one to quench my Assault thirst next year. =============

Agreed, just out of proportion and the same goes for the playermodels in some way, they look kiddie and a bit like dols sometimes.
But for the rest, it looks amazing, a mix of ghotic and sf cityarchitecture in some maps and Epic don't trade off highres textures for HDR& real time ligthing.
As for the gameplay styles, I like assault the most.... =============
Epic say there's no Assault in 2007. They always disliked it and never supported it with many maps. They also retired it before (in UT2003) and then brought it back to try and save UT2004, again not supporting it at all after the initial release.
Problem with Assault is it's a very time consuming map to make and hard to balance equally for both defending and attacking teams. There's also seems to be a lot of one-off work involved (special weapons and vehicles). Given the lack of new official maps, people got bored playing the same six maps for months, and then Epic pointed to the lack of players and decided it wasn't worth supporting.
I suppose there's always plenty of time for Epic to change their mind, but I think they will look at Onslaught and Conquest, and reckon they've convered that kind gamestyle well enough. =============

Been that way for ages. It's supposed to be so that you can see your opponents weapon, and when a team-mate drops a weapon, you can identify it more easily. =============

So many people have asked me which UT I was referring to or automatically assumed I was talking about UT2003 whenever I mentioned it that I had to start identifying it as "Unreal Tournament from 1999" or "The original UT" that it's just become second nature to refer to it that way on the net.
It's easier to just say what you mean the first time and save anyone who might be unsure the confusion. =============
hopefully this means their going to use ut99 domination style rarther than that pathetic ut2003\4 one, which i utterly hate because someone can just trod in and take it in seconds and u cant do anything about it most of the time, dont think my desk will be able to take much more beatings  =============
But how about Bombing Run? Will they keep that at least? I absolutely love bombing run! =============
Lookling from a pure graphics standpoint, based on screenshots, I think it looks faboulous.
Sooner is better as far as I'm concerned, unless they rush it. =============
All i can say is WOW  =============
But how about Bombing Run? Will they keep that at least? I absolutely love bombing run!
IIRC, BR is out. It might end up beind a mod, but without official support, there won't me many servers... =============
I certainly HOPE it turns out like the original UT in the end, but I am kind of a skeptic since I seem to recall EPIC making that staetment before a time or two...
Right now, from what I have seen it looks like it will be closer in tone to 2003/2004 than the original. Just a gut feeling.
Two simple things they could do just off the top of my head, get rid of the bounce when you walk/run, and bring back the gore instead of this Matrix like de-rezzing thing they have going on now when you shoot someone.
Apart from that, they will probably have to bring back everyone from the original to contribute to the mix (announcer, composer, art/creative team members, etc.)
I hope that it does turn out like the original, and they ship with a new level editor as the aftermarket maps have always been the best.
Fingers crossed that it's not just a marketing ploy, :) =============

Er, all the gore is still there. That's just the corpse disappearing animation. All similar games have corpses that disappear.

Well, the editor will clearly be updated to make use of the new engine. =============

What bounce? =============

Bob can be turned off. The de-rez is done because of the ragdoll physics on the dead bodies. If they leave them there, after a few minutes there would be loads of dead bodies that need to be ragdolled.
Fingers crossed that it's not just a marketing ploy, :)
You can never tell. Epic has been known to BS plenty in the past. Have to wait for the reviews to come in, but it will still probably be better, and have you playing for more hours over a period of months/years than 99 percent of the other games that come out. =============

Yeah. I doubt we'll ever see a game with such perfect gameplay as the original UT. The physics, weapons and pure flow of the game were perfect. No wonder it won the GOTY award.
I bet a complete port of that game to UE3 would be a hit. Imagine playing 4 vs 4 DM-Codex with next gen graphics.
Can't help you with that one. I never played UT 2003 CTF. I only played 1on1 DM.
DM-Compressed is actually the best thing with UT 2003. Superb duel map. =============

CTF-Citadel. All the 2003 maps were also shipped with 2004. =============
The original maps brought back would be a plus+ with updated graphics. I am talking about exact replicas of the originals but with much more detail.
I always liked the 'Liandri' map.
Bob can be turned off.
Thanks. I did not know that and I played a ton of UT 2003 & 2004, so I wonder if many other people were unaware of that? probably not :p They should make it so there is no 'bob' or 'bounce' (camera shake) when you move as the default like UT 99 was. Make the option to tutn it on rather than off.

Hmmmm, Seems like something they really should shoot for next gen. When you blasted an enemy before with a rocket, they would gib. now you blast them and it just pushes them along until they de-rez. Flying Gib Physics is what I want :) LOL. Should at least be an option for those with the most powerful systems. =============

Even the most powerful system would be brought to it's knees doing physics on all destroyed vehicles and dead bodies, considering how many things get killed on the average game - you're talking of hundreds of kills, especially on a large map with many players. =============

They dont totally dissolve in gibs, but they loose a few of them(Head, arm or leg) if you killed them with a heavy hit. If that dint happen for you yet, you should stop buying german versions of your games =============

Or more...a good rocket to the torso can leave nothing but legs behind....legs and bits. =============

The only problem in not rehashing was that it became too much Quake 3 in my opinion. Although I was very charmed about CTF mode in UT2003. Unfortunately the whole community moved to UT2004 and I never bought it, so unfortunately I didn't play CTF in a long time. :( Maybe I can get UT2004 nowadays very cheap.

Actually, I found Onslaught a step backwards. It was a bad rehash of BF1942 in my opinion and large scale maps just don't fit the Unreal Tournament type of games in my opinion. Closed quarter maps are designed to have a certain 'flow' which completely gets destroyed in big maps with too much freedom. I really couldn't get interested about Onslaught, which is why I never bought UT2004.
What I do hope for UT2007 is that they will bring back the UT1999 style Domination, because frankly, the UT2003 version sucked. The whole fun about domination for me was keeping as much as possible points for our team to get the others score to zero as fast as possible. That along with the great madness of that gameplay made it popular for me and my collegues back then. =============

No matter the size of the Maps, the action is always focused on 2-3 nodes and the vehicles are great (well, those that arent in the ECE-Pack) ... but can still be challenged by Players on foot. I had a bad feeling about Onslaught too( Vehicles in UT? - rediculous) and a bad feeling after UT2003 in general, until I tried the Demo.
The only problem is that you need teammates that actually know what they do and dont just grab a vehicle and leave you at the dead end of the map =============

Onslaught is the most popular gametype along with Deathmatch. It's got a lot of players, and a lot of Epic and community support. You may not like it, but you only have to look at the numbers playing to see that a lot of others do like it and play it while other gametypes have faded away. =============

Sounds like CTF Citadel. Not one my favorites. =============
LOL, I have gotten plebty of good hits in on UT 2K3/2K4. Things just don't feel as destructable as they did in the original. BTW, I was not trying to suggest that they leave every gib and scrap lying in play for the enire match.
I just hope for the old style back where the gibs would fly then vanish after a time. When you could pop someone's top with the sniper rifle and then whip out the rocket launcher, flak cannon or whatever and blast the headless corpse to bloody gibz... /psycho mode off/
And, LOL, I have never played the German release. Did they make the blood green Carmageddon style? =============
I liked the UT Insta Gib with one shot kills (shock rifles?) on a small map. The chaos in your face action and nothing but a jump to aid you in your defense. Good memories of that. I think that all the adrenaline etc moves changed the game a little to much from its core. I read somewhere that they were going back to an old UT feel and although moves would still be included it wont be so drastic (a dodge move wont shoot you across the screen to avoid being killed) so there will be a more in your face action.
Epic has always been a good supporter of the mod community and I for one really like using their editors. I'm just drooling at the thought of getting my hands on the UE3 version when it becomes available. :) =============
You can play with Vechicles in CTF as well and thats kind of fun. Some mods (hint hint) allow more felxibility with vechiles :) =============

I didn't think this was right, so I downloaded the demo just to check. View bob was set to a value higher than zero by default, though it wasn't as noticable. I suspect that has to do with the smaller indoor areas and (what feels like) much faster movement/gameplay than UT03/04. =============

iCTF is a blast. There's nothing better than carrying the flag and being chased by 5 guys. Adrenaline rush! The instagib community is still huge in Europe and it seems it'll never die. =============

Ofcourse I tried it. I played the demo alot. But just like Battlefield, I can't get attracted to large scale battlemaps. For me they aren't as much fun as a well designed closed quarters map.
Maybe since I got addicted to the Half Life 1 MOD Natural Selection 3, most FPS games are just plain boring. The gameplay is so simple in comparison to the complexity of Natural Selection 3 and teamplay isn't as much forced as Natural Selection 3.
The official website can be found here:
http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/
(Unfortunately it's down because it got hacked recently.)
I promise you, if you manage to grasp the complexity of this game, all other FPS games will look so boring afterwards. ;)

Most popular game mode may just as well mean that many Battlefield type of players became attracted to UT2004. It doesn't mean that the people that loved UT1999 and 2003 for other reasons all went playing Onslaught.
Sounds like CTF Citadel. Not one my favorites.
For me it was. When playing with normal weapons and translocator you can make great moves on that map. Like grabbing the flag, use the transporter to the top of the tower. From there you can either jump down from the left or right side and take a small middle obstacle to break your fall and thus not losing any health. Or jump down on the front side and using the impact hammer to break your fall.
And there were alot more moves like that that I even can't remember anymore. ;) =============

No, but it does mean that it is the most successful of the UT2K3/4 team gametypes, so Epic did something right there. Where those players came from is irrelevant. =============
Crusher, are you talking about view/bob in UT99? If so I have never noticed any bob or bounce in that game. Perhaps I have an older version? Did they change anything for the GOTY edition at all?
In any case, the bounce or 'bob' was pretty extreme in UT2K3 for my taste. I guess I got used to it and UT2K4 did not seem as bad, but still they have made nothing like the original game since.
At least I'll always have the original :) =============

ahhhh.... i loved it.... =============
The monastery was probably my favourite. I just loved those wacky levels in UT Classic. Along with everything else, I think UT2kX just bored me with their "standard" levels very much like Q3A. 2004 is a bit better with the inclusion of the older levels but they are much too big and wide leading to a completely different feel. =============

ok, this might sound really nasty, but best laugh i got playing UT was when 3 friends came to my house, so we played in LAN. me against 3 of them.. the catch was that they were console playing types and never played UT, but since they did play games every day they thought i am being arrogant and that they'll teach me lesson....
so i picked levels where i could push them off with shock rifle
invisible + shock rifle + 3 noobs == laughing so hard when they were falling down and screaming at me "from where you bitch??!!!??" and things like that.... =============
Heh, I know the feeling. I used to setup impromptu matches with a null-modem pass through cable between myself and a friend of mine (nowadays we use a USB pass cable -- things are just waaaaay easier to setup heh). We used to play a lot of instagib 140% speed on monastery - good clean fun! =============
instagib was real fun... meh.... i remember small LANs we used to have at my house, up to 6-7 people... UT, CS and MOHAA.... tons of fun.... =============
I remember the LAN parties we used to have back when I was at the community college. We played a whole lot of UT, and I remember one game where I elected to use nothing but the impact hammer and the speed relic. There was one guy who wasn't nearly as good as me, and so figured I'd kill him, but he managed to, nearly every time, get his hands on the vengeance relic and get me to kill him in a place where I couldn't get away quickly enough. Now that was some fun stuff :) =============
We used to hang on an a snipers only server out of Vegas. Some of the funnest gaming I have ever had in my life. Used to play on crazy custom levels like 'Bedrooms' 'Backyard' & 'Bathroom.' 'Enemy at the Gates.' was a real fun sniper map also, inspired by the movie I assume. Some of the best levels were aftermarket ones. 'Football' was another one I remember having played often... :)
Someone should compile and make available a pack of every aftermarket map for the original UT. I wonder how large something like that would be? I wish I still had my old install with those maps downloaded... I must have had dozens of them. I believe my old drive failed and that's why they were lost (it was some time ago) :( =============
