Simple question, I'm trying to get a feel for what the average extreme gamer hardware nut is gaming at. :) =============
1280x1024. Yeah i know my GFX can do a hell of a lot more....sod it i'll just ramp up the AA. =============
1920x1200.
Im not sure "extreme gamer hardware nut" is a good term for the people of this forum though... =============

I meant it in a nice way. :oops: =============
1600x1200 or 1280x960 depending on game. =============
1024x768 I'm limited by my Viddy Card see sig. =============
either 1280x1024 or 1024x768 depending on the game. anything else makes it feel all wierd and distorted out of perspective. I am limited by my system atm but even when I wasn't (counter strike) 1024x768 becuase it felt right. =============
I meant it in a nice way. :oops:
Oh I know. I just dont think most people here have high end hardware, is what I ment. =============
1024x768 with muchos AA and AF, although I will ramp up to 1600x1200 on older games or if the peformance is acceptable. =============
1024x768 or 1280x768 (depends on whether the game supports w/s or not). =============
640x480 or lower(if available) in games.
Desktop is at 1280x960. =============
Usually 10x7 because of my now outdated 9500 Pro, sometimes 12x10 depending on the game. Of course there are those oddball games that don't support 1280x1024, in which case I have to use 1280x960 and endure black bars on my LCD. =============
1280x1024 ('cept for FEAR demo).
My card can handle much more for most games, but my monitor only supports 85hz up to that resolution, and my eyes can't bare lower. :(
X850 XT 256MB =============
I play all the games @ 1280x1024 if my system can handle it, if not I use 1024x768 which kinda suck because I'm using a lcd right now and 1280x1024 is the native resolution =============
Everything I can runs at 1920x1080 to fit my 16:9 50" RPLCD Hitachi TV. In total number of pixels, this is 8% more pixels than 1600x1200 :) =============
1280x1024 4xAA 8xAF
or for a game like F.E.A.R 1024x768 and some AA
RainZ =============
Dig, I think 1280X1024 is too common to be left out from this poll. =============
I have a Intel P4 3Ghz (yeah, I know, but AMD were behind at the time) with a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB.
For most games I res at 1024x768 and then max out the AA and AF. Seems to work rather well (though in some games, like CSS, AF can look worse with what I presume is a negative mipmapbias meaning you can literally see the AF borders moving). =============
1024*768 is my standard, but F.E.A.R absolutley rapes my machine... =============
1920x1200 if the game supports it natively, otherwise I go in and play around with cfg's. I hate playing at lower resolutions now.
Framerate has a lot of room for improvement but I've been playing a lot of old games so I can beat them and get it over with and some of the newer games I barely get it to be playable, like BF2 and DOD:S. I tried fixing Hearts of Iron 2 to be in widescreen and it looks amazing but the game CTD a lot. FEAR made my machine crawl so I'm really thinking about upgrading before the end of the year to a X2 and a R520. Is 2 GB of RAM worth it for the new Processor? =============
Dig, I think 1280X1024 is too common to be left out from this poll.
Yup. I use 1280x1024 or 1024x768 w. AA/AF as well.
1280x960 is rather weird, despite 4:3. =============
Dig, I think 1280X1024 is too common to be left out from this poll.
Yeah - another LCD owner running 1280x1024 here too =============
1280x960 for the win :cool:
Nokia 447Xi 17" Trinitron CRT =============
Older games: 1280x1204
Newer games: 1024x768 (basically, that means all DirectX 9 based games)
with 2xAA & 4xAF.
System: Radeon 9700 Pro, XP2800+, 1024MB PC2700. =============
Why is 1280*1024 not included when it's supported by virtually every game there is, whereas 1280*960 only appears in a handful of titles in comparison? The most popular LCD rez at the moment is 1280*1024. =============

1600x1200 is the sweetspot for me. Now, with my present hardware that isn't really feasible with any kind of game nowadays, really, but that's what I'm gunning for. I won't trade a single resolution step for AA/AF. There's just no substitution for resolution.
Oh, and 1280x1024 is the work of the devil and you risk eternal damnation for using the evil unholy abomination of the 5:4 aspect ratio. ;) =============
Oh, and 1280x1024 is the work of the devil and you risk eternal damnation for using the evil unholy abomination of the 5:4 aspect ratio. ;)
Yeah, I was going with the same aspect ratio as it's something I stick to...but I'm still old school CRT here which probably has a lot to do with it. ;) =============
1024x768 here. Though in some games, like HL2 I play a bit at 1152x864 (it's a 4:3 rez) but I don't like it too much since my CRT only goes up to 75Hz at that resolution. I've just grown too fond of 85Hz or higher. Besides, since most of the games nowadays are D3D and I can't have triplebuffering there, a higher refresh helps a bit since I can't live without vsync. IQ >> performance in my book. =============
Where's 640x480? :) =============
Back in 1998, where it belongs :P =============
Where's 640x480? :)
Back in 1998, where it belongs :razz:
That was my thinking too, I actually had it included at first but got rid of it as just silly. ;) =============
New games 1280x960 @ 85 Hz.
Older games 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz. =============
it depends what my pc can handle to be honest. ideal would be 1280x1024 (19' tft)
but in reality its more 800x600 >< 1024x768 around =============
With my older games, I game at 1280*1024.
Newer games I would(usually) game at 1024*768. I cannot game on my computer right(except play older games) cause I'm stuck on IGP(even games like NOLF2 struggles). My PCI-E slot has been catching dust, so I'm looking into picking up a Radeo X700 or X800 card soon, hopefullly(and more RAM) all I can afford right now. =============
Another vote for 1280x1024 (although I don't mind 1024x768, either :)). I used to use 1280x1024 on my CRT as well, if possible. I liked it. :D =============
Back in 1998, where it belongs :P
Freakin' hilarious! =)
I'm a 1028 x 768'er myself...mostly cause all the games that get ported to Mac's are old enough so that my poor little 9000 Mobile doesn't choke.
Basically, Mac users have been looking around going, "What's all this DirectX 9 hubbub?" I'm a dual user, but I don't own a PC - I just follow all PC tech 'cause I love it. =============
i'm pretty resolution independant. it really depends on the game, and usualy has little to do with frame rate. older games like quake2 look better to me at 640*480 or 800*600 because as you ramp up resolution the particles get smaller. it takes away the "smoke" look on smoke, and turns it into just floating speckels. mods like q2max take care of this for me.
unreal tournament (original) is another strange game for me. anything over 1024*768 doesn't feel right, and i can't hit anything.
newer games i generaly run as high as i can. that end up around 1024*768 or 1280*960. when i first got DooM3 i ran it at 800*600 because of performance, but i've since upgraded (9700np->x700pro) so i've up'd the res to 1024. =============
Oh, and 1280x1024 is the work of the devil and you risk eternal damnation for using the evil unholy abomination of the 5:4 aspect ratio. ;)
I hear you, brother! I would never dream about touching anything 5:4. :wink:
It's a shame this excludes most fast, "gaming-oriented" displays. Oh well, current LCD technology isn't good enough anyway. =============
1280x1024 because of my monitor. That or 1024x768.
This is with X800 TT (or whatever the name was Digi invented for the X800 PRO Vivo -> X800 XT PE modded cards). =============
That was my thinking too, I actually had it included at first but got rid of it as just silly.
Actually, more like 1996 or '97. The spring of '98 saw the release of the V2s, which ushered in 8x6 gaming goodness (or 10x7 even for those who sprang for SLI). =============

Had that and a Riva128 in my P2 233MHz (only a short step behind the market leading 266) and had an A3D MX400 (or 300, hard to remember now) sound card. 17" monitor and a comfy 128MB of PC100 and a fast 8GB HDD and Altec Lansing speakers to top it all off. That thing lasted me for years!
Man '98 was a good year! =============

I'm guessing that's why so many people voted for "other". I'm simply amazed that more people play at 1024x768 than 1600x1200. Too many techies here and not enough real gamers :razz: =============

Real gamer = more money to spend? :???: =============
I'm weird, I tend to play on a 16:9 display. I don't hold to a particluar resolution either, I'll play at 1920x1080 in older games that my PC can hang with at that reoslution and I often use 1600x900, 1360x768, and 1280x720 for more demanding stuff. I even wound up with 1064x600 for Boiling Point just so I could read the HUD text from the couch and I'd use 848x480 too if I ever came across a game where I nedeed to go that low to keep the framerate up. On my 4:3 tubes I am the same way; 1600x1200 when I can, and all the way down to 640x480 if that lets me keep all the other graphics options cranked as much as I can and get good framerate. =============

No, it's PC makers who have insisted on making 1280x1024 the standard 1280-width resolution that are wierd. 1280x960 is the correct 4:3 aspect ratio for CRT's. 1280x1024 is a 5:4 aspect ratio that most displays don't support. So if you're running at 1280x1024, depending on the way the game does its transforms you may end up with some slight distortion. =============
Since I have a 1600 x 1200 capable LCD monitor (Samsung Syncmaster 213T) shouldn't I keep my resolution at a 4:3 ratio?? Whenever I do 5:4 the screen looks funny to me. I play WoW almost exclusively right now and would be interested to get some feedback from other WoW gamers out there. I have a x800 XT PE 540/580 so I am sure I can do 1600 x 1200 if I wanted too. Everything just gets so darn small...
I am currently 1280 x 960 at 85 Hz. I was also told that refresh rates on LCDs are not important...is this true? =============
Since there's no flicker on LCD's, refresh rate isn't as important as it is on CRT's. But your refresh rate still limits your framerate, so it still means something to have high refresh rates. =============
1024*768 here. Not lower because scanlines appear at 800*600 and not higher because of low fps. :) =============
ahhhh...digi..... dont feel bad about your old monitor....:lol:
there are other who have same issue.... maybe we can start support club for us poor 1024 guys?:wink: =============
Real gamer = more money to spend? :???:
Well considering there are several ~ $200 cards that can run consistently above 1024x768.... But everybody has different priorities in life :) =============

The correct way to run 1280x1024 on a CRT is to set the monitor scan with about a cm of black border on the sides, this of course is completely lost by most users... I don't get why some people don't instantly notice an elliptical "circle" when they see one. I cringe within 2 seconds if I sit at a display with the wrong aspect ratio. :?
It's a mystery to me that they chose 1280x1024 as a standard in LCD's, I mean that would've been in '99 or something. The 1280x1024 res. is a holdover from the '80s(!), which then meant that you could have the framebuffer fit snugly in multiples of five number of memorychips. Since the mid-90's they could've found a spot to bury this abomination, one would think. =============
1600x1200 doesn't feel right...dunno why. 800x600 is too blocky so like goldie locks im gunna go for the 'just right' feeling at 1024x768 =============

I'm actually feeling a tad better about it looking at the poll results, besides 1024x768 just feels natural for gaming for me. (Lots of AA/AF of course! ;) ) =============
Well considering there are several ~ $200 cards that can run consistently above 1024x768.... But everybody has different priorities in life :)
Problem is consistency. My Radeon 9800 Pro can run any game at 1280x960, but there will always be spots or moments where the framerate drops, and of course those moments are the moments when you need to be able to reaction (since it will be explosions, multiple enemies, etc.), so I prefer to stick to 1024x768 and max out the AF and AA since it's the CPU which limits me here, and it looks better than 1280x960 with the AA and AF values I can hit there :) =============

Sorry man, my bitterness at not having enough to buy what so many others do got the better of me. :cry:
No harm done, I hope. =============
