My iTunes library is stored on an external drive

I have ripped DVD TV shows, e.g The Simpsons, which are listed in iTunes as TV Shows with season and episode numbers, but if I reinstall windows and add my library back to iTunes, all of them appear as Movies and I have to right click every episode to reset them to tv show which is very tedious when i have around 200 TV Shows.

Is there a way of changing their preference from movie to TV Show more than one at a time?

Unfortunately, there's no easy way.

There are probably scripts out there that can do it, but I use Windows and there aren't very many out there to my knowledge, at least when compared to a Mac.

The way I usually do it is to make a playlist of the TV shows that need to be flagged as such, and then start with the first one. TV show, next, down button, next, down button, next, etc. until they are all tagged.

Actually, there is a bug in iTunes that it doesn't update the internal tags when you change the Video type, and even as of 7.6.2 it still hasn't been fixed. You can report it to Apple via their iTunes feedback page (http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html).

In the meantime, you can use a tool like AtomicParsley (http://atomicparsley.sourceforge.net/) -- available for Windows, Mac and even Linux, to modify the tag in the files themselves. There are also Applescripts for Mac users that can do this from within iTunes, but these don't write the information into the tags any more than modifying them manually in iTunes.

AtomicParsley itself is a command-line utility, which will work very well directly but if you'd rather use a GUI-based tool, there are a number of third-party tools out there that basically just add a GUI front-end to AtomicParsley itself.
