ok, i think i already asked this before. i want every song on my ipod to sync the ratings and play counts back to my itunes library. how do i make a smart playlist do that?
do i have to make a regular playlist then, somehow make a smart playlist interact with the regular list?
i have no idea, please help. =============
If you want to sync everything in your library to your Touch, you don't need a playlist at all -- just set it to auto-sync.
If your library exceeds the capacity of your Touch, you can use a playlist to designate what goes on or off the Touch. You would create one or more playlists to auto-sync to. This is different from a full auto-sync since you're only synchronizing to a specific set of music based on one or more playlists. For the playlists you sync to, you can either use a regular playlist (which you manually manage the contents), or use a smart playlist (which automatically retrieves items from your library based on criteria you define), or both regular and smart playlists.
For regular playlists, you drag and drop contents to it, much like you'd manually manage an iPod. You have to watch the size of the playlist to make sure you don't exceed the Touch's capacity.
For smart playlists, in addition to defining the criteria used to retrieve items, you can designate a maximum amount based on GBs or number of items, and you can have it retrieve things randomly. Keep in mind that to have a smart playlist update its contents manually, you need to include some sort of criteria that forces things out now and then. The best thing I find is "Last Played Date is Not in the Last X Days", where X whatever you're comfortable with. Once a song is fully played, it no longer meets the smart criteria and drops out of the playlist on the next sync. It can come back in later once enough time elapses.
I'm currently using a series of smart and regular playlists, where regular playlists are for songs and complete albums that I always want on my Touch. I use smart playlists to grab top songs that I haven't heard in awhile. There is one "master" smart playlist which is the sum of all the playlists for the Touch's contents. The master is the basis for any other playlists I want.
You can get very creative and spend way too much time playing with the possibilities ;)
For reference, please see a very detailed document on playlist management from Code Monkey, a member here.
