what are the different types of anti-depressants?

my nurse practitioner said i've pretty much been on all the types (I dunno if I believe her. I've only been on 4. Luvox, which did nothing, celexa and trazidone made me manic, and neurontin for supposed bipolar did nothing but give me back aches and awful awful mood swings. I was so manic and then so depressed...worse than usual) and I REALLY need to find one that works. I hate mecications, I hate being drugged up, but I've been depressed and on a downward spiral for about 9 years (since I was 8 or so) and I've been getting worse and worse (on top of being severely depressed, I can't keep friends because I'm apparently always freaking out at them because I think they're going to leave me, I have constant just...temper tantrums, just randomly I'll slip into anger and be slamming doors and shrieking, it got so bad, the depression, that I had to drop out of school last year. I don't know if I can even get back for this year. and it's so bad that the word hospital is popping up and I want that word to go away. that will not be part of my reality).

I need a new nurse practitioner though. when i saw her yesterday, despite how i kept saying i want out of how i felt she kept making me feel like a moron who won't do anything and just completely crushed my dreams and doomed me.

Yes it does sound like you need a new nurse practitioner (sp?). Im sorry but I dont know any thing about anti-depressents. But Paxil?

I do need a new nurse practitioner. I wish I could get a new one. but she's all I really have. we searched for weeks for her. because no one else would treat people under 18.

I'd take paxil, might have to (would help my social phobia and anxiety), that's the one anti-depressant I'm scared of though. heard so many bad stories about it.

Well, there is a new drug that has just been approved. It's called Lexapro and it has the fewest side effects. Only 5% of patients taking it experience side effects.

http://www.cnn.com/2002/HEALTH/conditions/08/15/new.antidepressant/index.html

There are 5 well known drugs. Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox and Celexa. Currently, Celexa has the lowest instance of side effects, with about 10% of patients experiencing them. I would also include Wellbutrin on this list.

Each person reacts different to every drug. My mom takes Prozac and loves it. I took it for 2 weeks many years ago and had horrible side effects. My best experiences were on Celexa and Wellbutrin. I had side effects with every other drug.

Can you talk to your nurse practictioner and explain how you feel?

I hope this helps,

Ann

To the best of my knowledge there are four main types of antidepressents - tricyclics (popular in the past but very rarely used nowadays because they have way way too many side effects), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (Nardil, Parnate, not often used because although they work, they also react adversely with far too many other drugs and food), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (Prozac, Paxil/Seroxat, Zoloft/Lustral, Luvox/Faverin, Celexa/Cipramil, they're generally considered to be the safest type) and selective noradrenalin reuptake inhibitors (NARI's haven't been around long but are gaining popularity). Apart from these main types, there's also Desyrel, Wellbutrin and Effexor.

Thank you for your input dear one.
