whenever my sense disappears due to a cold so does my taste buds...what gives?

I learned in 1st grade when we learned about the 5 senses (taste, touch, smell, sight, & hearing) that taste and smell are connected....

i know they're connected, but i want to know why exactly this happens.

frankly, i don't care if i have learned it before. it probably wasn't important enough for me at the time to even remember it, and it still isnt that big of a deal.
moreover, im always interested in hearing others perspectives on health issues anyway, so the question still remains.
