I don't really know where to post this in the Wellness forums, so I thought I'd start here...
How is child abuse defined? Legally, psychologically, whatever...
More specifically, if a parent isn't physically abusive, but verbally degrading or emotionally non-responsive, does that count as abuse? Or is there another term I should be looking for? I'm concerned for a friend of mine, and I don't know WHAT to do.

P.S. No, the friend isn't me. =============
Well, my social psychology book uses this defination:
child maltreatment - actions that harm children either physicially or psychologically. Such treatment may take different forms but most cases involve: (1) physical abuse (attacks that produce physical injuries; (2) sexual abuse (fondling, intercourse, and other forced sexual contacts); (3) physical neglect (living conditions in which children do not receive sufficient food, clothing, medical attention, or supervision); (4) emotional neglect (failure of parents or other adults to meet children's need for affection and emotional support); and/or (5) psychological abuse (actions that damage children emotionally, such as rejection and verbal abuse).
I would say that your friend is being psychologically abused or emotionally abused. It happens quite a bit and it is very damaging to the child. You can call social services in your area and talk to them without giving your name, to see if they would like to get involved. Or you could ask your friend to talk to someone. Or you can call your local crisis line and talk to them about it. They will have some good referrals in your area.

You can also call WEAVE in Sacramento California. Their number is listed. Not only can they tell you what abuse is, they can help you to figure out how you can go about helping the child in a safe caring manner. I use them alot, and they have a 24 hour crisis line that they encourage people like you to use anytime. Every call is confidential, and they are very warm, and will help you sort out what to do.
I hope this helps. =============
