Creative Audigy 2 ZS for me. It lasted me for 2 years before I upgrade to X-Fi.

Not much difference, I think Aud4 just got more certification. Save money, get Aud2 or x-fi

buy a chaintech av710 for 20$ for the digital outs and get a real DAC, like a Entech 203.2 Number Cruncher. Or just use the Envy24 chipset in the chaintech, rock solid performance for a 20$ card. Creative is junk unless you absolutely have to have the latest and greatest cheesy effect they've added to a couple games. I think Creative is secretly owned by Bose, they are in the same league, overpriced junk :D

not sure about the price of audigy 2zs, but at the lastest creative warehouse sales, audigy 4 is going for $99

i own audigy 4 and still using it, i belief it is more than enough for normal user (even though i have nv use audigy 2 zs b4), i brought audigy 4 at $129 last time, but still feel that it is a good buy....

If I recall correctly, both the Audigy4 and the 2ZS use the same DACs. I.e the only things that differ are the connectors/additional features. Sound quality is the same.

Blargman, where do I find the number cruncher here? eBay brings up a cheap 205.2 and a cheap 203.2, but both come with insane delivery charges (a common trick). Googling it brought up this thread, so yeah. I'm planning on wiring it to my Denon AV receiver to two Mission 760i bookshelf speakers and an Audio-Technica ATH-A700.

jmmtn4aj -- if you plan on wiring it to your Denon Receiver, by all means use that for the DAC! :D sry for the caps. What I mean by that is, you should get something along the lines of a M-audio Transit, which has TOS Link output. This way you can pass through DTS & AC3 to your Denon. Does your Denon have TOS inputs?

I'll look around for a place to buy. M-audio might be available in your neck of the woods though, they are a pretty big audio company.

Given those 2 choices I would go for NEITHER of them!

Why go for 'obsolete' technology? It's not like sound cards change tech often like video cards?

IMO it's better to save up a bit more and get a X-Fi if you're in the market for a sound card.

They work great with decent headphones! The surround sound effect is so much better than previous generations of soundcards - useful if you game with headphones.

Your speaker setup have to be kind of decent, but you certainly don't need a $300-$400 set of speakers to enjoy the benefits of X-Fi! I think EAX 5.0 would be a good enough reason already...?!?
