I have supplied a wireless network to an older client who has a Windows 98 laptop (though its a relatively high spec PIII with 256mb RAM). There was all sorts of problems with the installation meaning I had to take the laptop home and install a load of DLL files manually. I got the WIFI to work at my house unsecurely as WIN98 does not support WPA and I could not be bothered setting up WEP just for testing purposes.
I secured the network at my clients house this works but everytime you reboot the network card just sits there looking for a network, unplugging it and plugging the USB card back in sometimes works and sometimes does not.
Both the adapter and router are D-LINK.
Any ideas? =============

There's an anagram there somewhere for helpful replies. =============
There's no F in ubuntu :(
JD: You're using a technology that was around when Wifi was a figment of a geek's imagination! Win98SE should work without any problems, although I have found DLink to be a big pain with Windows 98/NT.
My honest opinion would be to upgrade to XP and perhaps a new laptop (circa ?50inc vat). It would save him a lot of money in support time! =============
I am going to buy a 802.11b Linksys PC card which apparently has a lot of success under Windows 98SE. =============
Why not upgrade the PC to XP ?? It would run ok with that spec, providing you tweaked it a little and kept it to the bare minumum.
You will find that with 98SE there are always niggly issues with wireless. =============
The problem with XP is even with an OEM license (which is a bit dodgy too) its still ?0. =============
You will end up spending ?0 on wireless cards.
tbh, if I am putting wireless onto a Win98se Pc, I tend to be doing it from a fresh reinstall, as Win98 is a messy bugger. =============
