Just thought of this after watching "Spartan" starring Val Kilmer.
He plays some American special agent who has to go "off the reservation" in order to rescue an American politicians daughter in the hands of sex trade slavers in Dubai.
Anyway, there's one scene where he's on the phone, talking about "speaking to the Chinaman".
He was supposed to be speaking in secret agent coded language to a American Middle Eastern mercenary.
Though I thought the epithet used was fucked, I thought the movie was good overall. But I was thinking that they could have used something else. Although the use of Chinaman didn't kill the movie for me, it sort of stopped the movie for a little for me. =============
campy dialogue and overly designed scenes. after watching old japanese movies this past quarter, i really appreciate style over production. =============
There was this Vietnam War movie I was watching. The supposedly "Vietnamese" people were speaking some kinds of languages, not Vietnamese. I was disappointed.
Spartan was a good movie. =============
True Romance comes to mind. I was really enjoying the movie up until Dennis Hooper's "Nigger" speech. While I understand the point of him giving it. It still killed something about the movie for me. =============
I think if someone uses a racial epithet, it doesn't really kill it for me per se, it gives it a more realistic tone to an extent, as many people still use the terms nigger, chink, and spic when talking amongst themselves about others. Though if it's done just for shock value, it's pretty much ridiculous. =============

I agree. I was caught off gaurd if you will in True Romance because I was really digging the characters and while I do understand why it said it still threw it off for me a bit. =============

Yeah, I have no problem if they want to make the racial epithets as part of some idiot's character.
But it's sort of a bummer to hear it thrown in for some random crud.
I also think throwing in a little sex scene is sort of dumb too. Not that I don't appreciate a little T&A, it just seems like such a dumb device with which to hold attention.
Rented Desperado and the sex scened between Banderos and Hayek, though -- umh!, seemed out of place. I guess if the violence was going to be so graphic, why not the sex. But what did it really do for the movie? =============
i have a problem with excessive cgi. I also don't like holy story-lines, like GLadiator where the general fights for democracy... cmon, gimme Eli Wallach any day over that self-righteous crap. Thus, most movies out now aren't worth the time to watch. =============
I almost forgot the most obvious thing that would kill a movie for me --
Seeing them make fun of people of color or put them in a stereotypical light. =============
The stars of historical epics looking nothing like the person you envisioned. Examples bieng the star who played King Arthur in that new flick that just came out and Helen in this summer's Troy. =============
Is that anything like stars who are way passed doing any more of their particular series?
Like Sean Connery in his last performance as James Bond?
Or like William Shatner doing one too many performances of Kirk? =============
Story lines like this;
Boy meets girl. They have a great relationship at some point. One of them dies. =============
Bad dialogue and atrocious acting. Heather Graham? Yeah. =============
