Does anyone know if a surf body will be close to fitting on a hilux chassis? and more importantly will i be able to get it plated in QLD?
I'm going to start a lexus V8 conversion soon on my hilux and am thinking about putting either an extra cab body or surf body on it.
Its a 91 hilux single cab and im gonna use a body of a similar age.
Cheers. =============
It will fit and it has been done b4 but it will require modification of the bodymounts. Im pretty sure the IFS surf has a slightly thinner chassis width, Im only guessing from bodylifts that I hav done but I rekon the front most 4 mounts may come close to lining up and the rest will need to be moved around. Wud be very cool, Surf body/leaf chassis with trailgear kits fitted and V8. Sumthin that I wanna do in the future in fact so i will be watching if u choose to do it. Cheers =============
"Surf body/leaf chassis with trailgear kits fitted and V8"
That was exactly my plan:D =============
Im so jealous i h8 u lol :) =============
Lol, I've had a chat with bubs about swapping the surf body onto my hilux chassis, he said because of the different wheelbase the chassis would have to be shortened which he said he could do in a day, So im calling an engineer today to see if it can be legal in QLD! =============
Yer true to get the rear wheel arches to line up with the axle housing. I bought a diff off a guy once who had thrown a 2door surf body on a lux chassis and it all worked well for him. Good luck wit the engineer, he may get upset about the cutting/shortening chassis part but u neva no. =============
I talked to the engineer today and he said he would have no problem approving it aslong as its cut in the right place and re-inforced adequately. Im sort of thinking differently at the moment tho, since im getting this surf cheap and i mean cheap! im wondering about maybe selling my hilux, which i will still get good money for, putting the 1uz in the surf and doing an SAS with coils and a bundy front. Which would leave me enough money from the lux to fit some 33's or 35's and an air locker on the surf.
I think the surf with an sas and coils will be far more capable then a 3 inch lifted hilux with a superior engineering kit?
Would love to hear what people think?
Cheers =============
Buddy will be doin my bundy SAS in a few weeks time so Ill be able to comment on it shortly. Honestly tho the only reason I am goin coil front is due to the rear being 5link coil standard. U get good flex out of coils but u also get other side effects unless time and money is spend gettin the geometry and certain aspects rite, u get loads of rear steer on the 5link with standard arms and big coils and its difficult to maintain a lowish ride height but still maintain good travel, unless u hav really long/soft coils or they r retained one and can deseat/reseat as they please. A standard front coil 3link doesnt offer much more flex if any ova a lux front leaf pack.
If I had a hilux I wud be throwing the 3" trailgear classic front and rear leaf kits in and trimming the guards accordingly to run bigger tyres, Hav a look at boofs lux for instance. It flexs like a gymnaist and once settled and with the lack of a bodylift wud sit at a very moderate ride height. At the end of the day I think a hilux with decent leaf setup and SAS'd surf both with dual lockers wud be very even as far as capability goes. Each to ther own, Im absoultely stinging to c the locked 8" bundy front end, highsteer and custom radius arms bolted under the front of my truck and the IFS segments in the bin. =============
Yeh its something to think about, i do like the trailgear leaf setups, either way i pick the surf up not this saturday but the next. Im excited for that lol =============
Hey mate do the TG kits $ for $ they cant be beat imo. The problem I see you having is getting a leaf front legal with a coil rear. If it were me I would pull the coils out and use the TG kits front and rear. Check out some of the yank sites its a common mod over there with great results.
You will hera people tell you leaf cant match coil imo thats crap I used to think the same until I did some research. If you have any queries or are in Qld and want to look at mine or catch up for a chat PM me and I will give you my number. =============
I've been following your thread boof since brooksy started the barwork, and the trailgear kit looks awesome, if i were able to get it engineered i'd have no doubts about using the trail gear 3 inch front and rear leaves in the surf, i was a bit unsure of going the IFS eliminator kit in the front and coils in the rear tho. I'll have to talk about this with the engineer aswell. The whole reason i wanted to put the surf body on my hilux chassis was because i could get that engineered then run the TG 3 inch front and rear. =============
wat boof said. i started looking around at coil set ups then found tg kit and have seen it work in the flesh and it offers great flex. this is now the way im going. does nemisis still have his set up for sale? if so that might be worth a look if you still want to go coils. =============
Na nem sold that gear, i got in to late haha.
Well i talked to the engineer again today and he's told me he can approve the surf with front SAS with the trailgear IFS eliminator and the rear with the matching trail gear classic rear.
So thats the way im most likely to go, but first i have to get the surf next saturday and start on the 1uz conversion. I picked up the lexus auto with modified output shaft installed this arvo. So once i get the adaptor and the surf i can start on it. Which means i might have to start a buildup thread soon. :D =============
yes u will, can u please rub sum of ur motivation onto me i desperately need it to help me get all my half finished projects in order lol. =============
make sure you get heaps of pics! sounds like its gonna be a good build! =============
Haha thanks fellas, i think i'll be more motivated once i sell my hilux and have the money in my account lol. Ive done the maths and im thinking that it'll cost me about 10 grand all up to get the surf to a point of: 1uz, trailgear kits front and rear engineered, new paint (maybe) 35's on new rims and an airlocker. And that 10 grand includes the price of the surf (i've already got most of the 1uz gear so im not countin that), I just really hope this guy im talking to doesnt sell it before i get there, I'll tell you guys how much $ i get it for once i've got it in my yard, dont wanna jinx myself lol =============
I luv to see 4Runners/Surfs getting built. We will need lots of pictures. If you do end up with the Surf what color are you thinking of painting it?
Jason =============
Im thinking a dark gunmetal grey, like the colour of the 79 series utes. Its already the standard grey that surfs came in. =============
Well i finally got my Surf!....for a grand total of 900 bucks! Im stoked with it, the bloke i bought it off said it didnt run but me and bennypee off this forum got it going this arvo and took it for a quick spin. Although i think the head might be cracked, had to prime it and use some aerostart to get it going and when it got to full temp air was constantly coming out of the radiator overflow. But thats fine cause i got the lexus motor almost ready to go. The body is pretty nice to for what i paid. Heres some photos. So there will be a build up thread starting at the end of this week, the 2.4 turbo engine, gbox and transfer will be out by next weekend.
Im excited haha =============
Good pick up mate nice work =============
Cheers mate, im pretty happy with it. Once i get the motor in and the car registered and stuff i'll have to come and have a look at your leaf set-up boof, i'm interested to see how to see the TG setup rides, i've seen it flexin well, but i'd like to see if it'd be a good all round setup. What are your opinions of it on dirt roads, corrugations and road? and more importantly the tough stuff? =============
