can anyone tell me what diff ratios are available for my 89 model hilux sr5 4x4 . i,ve just got a 308 v8 installed and with the standard 4 cyl deisal ratios its revving at 3850 rpm at 100km. i,ve been told that toyota surfs had a taller ratio can anyone confirm this.......if i could drop my revs back to 3000 rpm at 100km i would be happy. :truck: =============
Yeah that's pretty high revs.
Pop the bonnet and have a look at your compliance plate riveted to the firewall. Look at the axle / trans code it will be something like "G285" which mine is, meaning 4.3:1 diff ratio.
Yours should be similar ratio. On the justdifferentials site they do a 4.11:1 or 3.90:1 ring and pinion set. You want to go a "higher" ratio (ratio numbers closer to each other) to drop cruising speed revs.
To swap rings and pinions though its expensive. I was quoted about $1,500 to change mine and that was me supplying the ring and pinion. Although this did include a full rebuild of both diffs. =============
hey 894runa.
just checked com plate under trans / axle its G52 and G143.
something i found interesting was that the engine com is saying 22r. im only new to 4x4s but isnt a 22r a petrol engine. a deisel engine was removed ( 3L ). does anyone know what ratio G143 is.
cheers 308 sr5. =============
Yes the 22r is the toyota petrol, so originally that may have been in the car. Can you see if the engine mounts look new or see traces of old ones that were ground off as to fit a 3L in place of a 22r I think the mounts have to be moved.
the G52 refers to your gearbox and is the box that toyota put behind just about all its non - turbo four cylinders in these years.
The G143 is your diff info. From another site the G = 8" standard diff, 14 = 4.875:1 ratio and 3 = 2 pinion LSD.
If your diffs are still the original factory ones then the 4.875 relatively high ratio number (therefore low gearing) explains the very high revs at cruising speed. Good if you are running big tyres (33" plus) but not so good for smaller tyres and highways.
For comparison my diffs are 4.3:1 and at 100 kph the 3L engine revs at about 2800 rpm with 31" tyres. With a V8 you would not need to have it revving so high as this at cruising. =============
308 r u planning on running larger tyres in the future? If u change to a taller ratio now to fix ur cruising revs then go larger tyres u will be wanting to chage back due to the lack in low down acceleration and crawl speed.
Being 4.88's that r currently in urs u shud hav no problem selling both and buying a pair of 4.3 centres. U can probably nealry make a profit if u source and fit the diff centres urself, try ToyotaSurf Australia Site (http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au) or the other various forums for second hand diffs. I hav a rear 8" 4.3 for sale if u r interested, ur SR5 wud be IFS am i rite? in which case the surf site is ur best bet for an IFS 4.3. Cheers =============
Hey 308sr5 I have an 85 Lux with 253 in it and mine sits on 3150 rpm @ 110 kms, so 3850 is pretty high. I have changed my diff ratios from 4.88 to 4.3 (from any 2.8d lux), and it has dropped the revs down to about 2600 rpm. It is possible too that if it was originally fitted with a 22r petty that you may be getting a false reading from the tacho, as the original would have read 4 cycles as opposed to eight. You may need one of these:
Tachometer Interface
The standard Toyota petrol tachometer will not operate directly from the V8 ignition system. Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture an interface for the V8 petrol engine that will make operative the original 4-cylinder tachometer.
At the present time no tacho interface is available for the Diesel Toyota tachometer.
They are $140 from Marks 4wd Adaptors Home Page (http://www.marks4wd.com/index.html)
Hope this helps =============
thanks guys for all your help. much appreciated
if anyones interested in the 4.88 diff centres drop us a line.
lucks on my side as my old work truck 94 hilux 2.8d is sitting gathering dust so according to the information you guys have given me it should have 4.3 centres in it. know what im doing next weekend.
thanks guys. =============
Just a thought dude, I have a worked 308 in mine and it only revs @ 2000 rpm at 100, I have 4:11 in it, but I also have lower gearbox ratios as well. Are you planing on changing the box? =============
will probably keep the original g52 box as i have a spare one out of my old work truck. if they break i'll look at different options.what box are you running?. i belive you can run a dyna box suppose to be very strong but very expensive too. do you know if this is true? what size tyres are you running . im only running 31s at the moment. =============
If u r wanting to keep it manual go with a R150 or R151 from surfs, V6 4runners and prados. The R151 has a shorter/lower first then the R150 but they r more or less the same strength. The 2J supras run a R154 which is the same also but has different ratios and needs to be adapted to run a transfer. If I remeber correctly the dyna box is an R454 which is a low geared R series box with a steel casing (about a trillion KG's) Dont quote me on the model code tho.
It all depends on ur driving style, If u hav a heavy foot and dont mind side steping the clutch then the G52 is gona detonate pretty soon, but then again GUTS runs the G52 behind his 1UZ with dualcases and it still goes fine for him. =============
yer i want to stay with the manual and my right foot is very heavy. (size 14. thats my excuse a im sticking to it hahaha). i have a spare box and transfer case G52. but if, should say when they expire i will look into the boxs you have refered too. i,ve seen that truck of guts on a few clips on you tube. very nice setup. would love a 1uz in mine. =============
