high beams no lows

Position: Home >> CarCare >> Mazda >> Text ¡¡
I have high beams, but no lows. I put a meter to the bulb plug, and got voltage on high setting but nothing on low. So Im thinking either switch or relay. Anybody else ever have this problem, input would be appreciated. Thanks.
=============
I'm not positive but some bulbs like HIDs have only 1 setting. Or so I have read somewhere on the forums.

Did you check you headlight fuses? I think theres one for high and one for low?

I was thinking the same thing, I've spent so much time looking at the fuse box but now I'm almost blank. I think there is but I can't remember.
=============
Well it would only make sence to have one for each. I guess I could always go out to the garage and look for you lol.
=============
It's pretty simple, your bulbs are burnt out. Replace both of them and you should be good.

There are actually 2 filaments in your bulb, one for low and one for high. Your lows obviously get used more. Also, if you car comes with daytime running lights, the lows are always on. They only run a lower voltage.

So go change your bulbs, simple enough?
=============
^^^ what he said - take the bulbs out and look at the filaments. its not uncommon for the lows to blow out, and not the highs
=============
put a meter to the bulb plug, and got voltage on high setting but nothing on low.That statement negates the above.<that statement="" negates="" the="" above.=""></that>

Had the same problem 2 days ago, both lights worked only on hi-beam. It was the bulbs. I changed them and all is OK now

bulbs.
=============
He said he had no voltage on the low beams part of the headlight plug, but then again who knows, try a new bulb first.
=============
before anything you should try the fuse, fuse-.10 bulb-$10

Thread cleaned up. Keep your arguing to yourselves, please.

To the problem at hand -- is it possible that the car is smart enough to 'turn off' the voltage to the lows if it knows the bulbs are burnt out? I know little about light wiring, so that's about as intelligently as I can phrase it, LOL.

Either way, buying a new set of bulbs couldn't hurt, cause you'll wind up using them at some point. Even if they don't fix the problem, it's not like the bulbs aren't gonna burn out sooner or later and need replacing.

LOL, touche.

lol i think she means that something had to cause the fuse to pop (if thats also the problem)...and it was probably the bulb going out...
=============
I know and in all likely hood that would be the case.

Thats pretty much what fuses do.

Anyways, just go to wal-mart and get a some new ones.

^^^^^lmao, Its not the fuses since both beams share the same fuse. It may be the bulbs, but that doesnt explain the lack of voltage, maybe the the cuircit could be cut. I have heard of simular featers on some cars. Thanks for the info, I will try bulbs as soon as I get back from Miamy on tues, and update on the results. I really apriciate loaning me your brains lol. You guys are always helpful.

double post,,woops

how many mazda fans it takes to change a proteg?s bulb?
keep posting!! LOL :)

You sir, are fired.

I have just installed and HID kit in my car and I have the same problem. My high beams will work but not my lows. I dont know if it is because HID's need more power to the ballasts.....but then again that defeats the purpose of HID's because they are supposed to use less power from the car. Any way...if you look at the connector that hooks up to the light bulb you will notice 2 sets of wires, 2 red wires and 2 black wires. One pair is for lows and one for highs. I would say try a fuse. Because fuses blow to prevent any electrical spiking (increase in voltage) to a electrical device in your car like a light bulb. I am going to go try a fuse right now. As someone stated in a reply "fuses .10?light bulb $what ever autozone charges.00".

you probably have your power and ground swapped around. the protege uses a ground switched circuit on the headlights

The bulb on the laft side was burned out, however I found that the wire was frayed on the right side a little ways back from the plug, I didnt see it the first time because it was dark out. One quick splice, and life was gravy again. I thought it was weird that they both went out at the same time, and that explained it. Thanks for the advice peeps.
