Ok so tonight I drove my car to the store and all was fine. I left the parking lot and passed a car and heard a faint whine going through 2nd gear. I decided to close my windows, turn down the music and get a listen.
Well from about 2.8k-3k in 2nd all the way through to 5th gear I get a whining noise. Best way to describe it would be like an electric motor whine or a finer, lighter and smoother reverse gear (straight cut gear) whine.
It only does it under load, and stops as soon as Im out of gear or off the pedal. It gets increasingly higher pitched as my speed increases and isnt noticable @ low revs. Its even loud enough that I can hear it OUTSIDE of the car if Im passing by a wall or a car while accelerating with the windows down. If I take the car out of gear the noise dissapears until I either tap the shifter against the nuetral wall (on the left side next to 1st and 2nd) or put it back in gear.
my car and transmission are otherwise normal. The only "oddity" that I noticed was that over the last 3 days or so, 1st gear has given me a little trouble locking me out at a standstill. But its been nothing thats persisted, just back to neutral and it goes back into first.
The car is stock, oil is mobil 1 (not that it matters) and the gear oil was changed out at the end of last year to redline MT90.
I was thinking LSD, but then I thought I would have another noticable effect of an issue, that and no one really ever gets a warning sign. Im fearing the worst. So 2 questions: Anyone have any ideas, and anyone in my area up for a transmission teardown? =============
(bump) for the morning crowd.
still persists. =============
ok I THINK I sourced the problem.
It seems that somehow, my reverse lockout is no longer functional. I read another post in a thread that said their "noise" issue turned out to be the reverse lockout so I tested it out. Sure enough, no issue @ 80mph putting it into reverse.
Anyone with any experience with fixing the issue? Im going to do some research now, but I dont even know @ this point whether or not thats even fixable.
I would like to know what kind of potential problems I will have without fixing it though. =============
Shouldn't it grind like crazy when you put it in reverse while going forward? =============
well, ofcourse - but the transmission shouldnt LET you go into reverse while cruising down the highway.
however if that lockout fails, you will be allowed to place the vehicle into reverse anyway regardless of whether it will grind. I wouldnt normally try to place the vehicle in reverse from 5th gear, I just tested out my theory which proved true. =============
(bump)
still no ideas/help? =============
No idea what it would be specifically but there's obviously a problem if you can go into reverse from 5th. I'd suspect it's time for a rebuild. Might try contacting JDMSam, he has a fair amount of knowledge regarding the tranny. =============
Yeah thats what Im afraid of. I have an area to do moderate work, but not anything close to that magnitude.
Maybe Ill hit up dana @ the same time :p I know he loves my phone calls!! He rebuilt his MP3 trans didnt he?
I was hoping for the perfect situation of someone who went through an identical issue and fixed it themselves, I figured that wouldnt be the case but I tried. =============
