frost inside windows

Position: Home >> CarCare >> Care >> Text ¡¡
I have a 04 wrx and wondering if any of you guys have had problems with excessive frost on the windows. I'm thinking it has to do with the frameless windows not making a proper seal with the molding but i don't know.
=============
I was getting real bad frost on teh inside of my front and rear windshields. Not any on the side windows.

If your running your heater, make sure its set to circulate and not vent from outside. My car stopped sweating up after i switched that little lever. Switch it back once the weather permanently gets above freezing thou for teh year.

Yeah i got the lever to circulate but I still have decent frost inside running the heater. It's just really annoying

my 05 wrx was fine, until some snow got in through the window, and then a bunch got on the outside of the window, and a bunch of water condensed on the inside windshield, the next morning it was frosted... i scraped it off and cleaned it off but some is still there, gonna have to recirculate air for a while and windex the windshield or something... waterspots everywhere...

If you don't keep your car in a garage, moisture tends to build up over the winter. It's from your breath, and from tracking snow in, etc. I assume you're running the defroster, rather than the heater? It's pretty much a constant battle if you live somewhere really cold. I'm housesitting for a guy with a garage, and, even though it was 25 below, I had hardly any condensation at all today, just enough to need the defroster. If the car had been outside, especially if I'd hauled water with it lately, it would have taken half an hour for the defroster to burn off all the ice on the inside of the windshield. Luck, Alan.

wait a minute...

That isn't right.

To eliminate in cabin humidity (which is the issue), you have to use defrost and the fresh air selection. This is the only way.

Basically the windows are fogging and the low temp at the window is making it freeze.

This happened to me minus the frost when I had an extended visit to NC. One muggy rainy day the windows were fogged and no amount of heat/ cold/ open windows would rectify the situation.

Then I noticed that while detailing the car I had accidently switched the selector to recirculate :furious:.

Once this was corrected it went away.

It only works with defrost since that uses the AC to "dehumidify" the air.

thats so weird it frosted over one night and my a/c was on fresh air and the next morning my windshield had water all up on it in the inside.. ever since i put it on recirculate for when i park the car outside it doesnt happen any more.. my car doesnt have a air filter does tha tmake a difference?
=============
well the air circulation can only move so much air. Depending on how much water/ snow/ humid air you have introduced into the car the time it will take to get rid of it is going to differ. The air filtration shouldnt be a factor. but if you are going short distances and getting in the car with snowy feet every time its going to take forever.

If the vehicle is inside or outside shouldnt make a difference unless its humid out or you have a leak and overnight condensation is getting into your car.

I live in NH, the only time I need defrost is when I first get in the car and the temperature is ~32F.

Unless i put my head up against the window or blow on the windows I get very little fogging.

Thats what i was talking about, it probably wasnt clear. Easier done than said i guess.

Around here (in Chicago) we dont just have "dry" winter. We get a LOT of moisture in the air, so setting the climate control to pull teh air in from outside is what causes my inside glass to frost over.

When i switch my climate control to recirculate the inside air, and defrost the windows, after they are cleaned off I keep my system set to recirculate and just run the hot air.

If i were to switch back to the outside air, i would just start the whole process over.

Thats what i was trying to explain my first post.
=============
If you run defrost the outside air gets dehumidified through the AC

If you just use any other selection ie; foot/ dash, it would be like having the window open since they dont bring air in through the AC condenser.

DEFROST+FRESH AIR SELECTION= DEHUMIDIFIED/DRY

ANYTHING EXCEPT DEFROST+FRESH AIR=NOT DEHUMIDIFIED/WET

ANYTHING+RECIRCULATE+CABIN CONDITIONS=POSSIBLE FOGGY WINDOWS/WET

Got it?
