waiting before second coat wax sun shade

Position: Home >> CarCare >> Care >> Text ˇˇ
While waiting a day or two before a applying a second coat of wax, is there a preference as to whether the car should sit in the shade, or in the sun (to help cure or bake)?

Thanks
=============
I would say not outside at all. You really do not need the wax to "bake" on and actually on some black cars they can get so hot on the surface that some carnuba waxes shouldn't even be used on them.

Also, it really depends on what wax you are using. Some you can just layer after layer.
=============
Wax generally burns off in the sun with in a week or two depending on what kind , the color of the car and the weather conditions outside. I've never double waxed any of my vehicles Its pretty much a waste of time.

That is so far off the mark it's not funny.

Many benefits can be had from 'layering' your wax of choice, Generally speaking wait 72 hours before adding a second layer. (this will vary with different waxes, it's best to read manufacturer specs) I leave mine in the sun for a few hours a day to help the wax cure. You will find that letting the car "bake" in the sun can actually flatten out the layer of wax you have just applied so it can acually improve the finish. Just don't apply the wax to a hot panel this will badly affect the finsh and make it a pain to apply and remove.

Layering wax will give you extra protection from the elements and also increase the depth of shine and gloss depending on which wax you use.

Beware of uninformed replies like the one above.

you can layer carnauba paste waxes without "waiting" there really is no cure time per se. i usually give it a half hour before applying the next layer, some synthetic waxes need cure time. like the older zainos stuff (havent used zainos in a while i think the newer stuff comes with somthing that speeds up the curing process.) layering, especially with carnauba wax, adds depth to the shine. wax will not burn off but does evaporate over time.

some waxes are made that can be applied in the sun if you want. Poorboys nattys comes to mind. and i think the clearcoat moosewax as well. but ive always done my wax coats in the garage.

if your wax is only lasting a week or 2 then you have to be using some crappy wax. if you cant get a month out of it something is really wrong......either that or you have horrible paint an worse prep work. on sealants i generally get 4-6 months out of it with doing 3-4 coats. carnauba waxes id say 1.5-2 months.
=============
Carnauba wax's do have a cure time, for instance P21S is 24 hours, some higer end wax's are 72 hours. Synthetics are typically 72 hours Zaino has a ZFX enabler that speeds up the curing process IIRC (I don't use Zaino so I am not completely certain)

the cure time your thinking of has nothing to do with a "Cure time before layering". the exact cure time is dependent upon the percentage of carnauba wax that is used in the "wax" and weather it was made using yellow or white carnauba. also check out werkstatt trigger (a sealant).....layering can be done almost immediately but it is suggested to wait 30-45 min between coats.

layering will happen without waiting for the wax structure to completely "cure". your only talking about a few mil's of product left behind once you wipe off the dry wax (waste).

its kinda like the same basic principle of painting. you apply the next coat while the paint is tacky.....as well as clearcoating. if you waited for paint to fully cure in between coats you would be waiting forever.
=============
Please explain to me why you can layer a product before it cures completly. If you layer before the solvents (present in most waxes, particularly carnauba's to keep it pliable) have a chance to exit then all you are going to do is wipe of the existing layer while you "appear" to apply the second.

Forgive me if I am abrupt but what you are saying makes no sense to me.

If you hurry the process all you end up doing is increasing the probability of hazing, yellowing and clouding.

ok, this has been debated numerous times on Autopia. and yellowing. well thats is another "possible" myth in its own right......which has also been debated more then a few times on autopia as well.....lol.

point blank, some products need to cure and actually tell you to do so before layering and then there are other products that dont need time to cure.....like when i apply soeveran i usually give it a good 12-24 hrs before applying a second coat. when applying werkstatt trigger i finish product removal and start reapplying product where i first started removal. an Jeff actually says this is just as effective as waiting 12-24 hrs before reapplying.
Souveran is such a soft paste that i do give it time to sit usually a full day, while when i use nattys blue i recoat within 30 min or so.

every rule does not apply to every product. reguardless of similarities. agreed??

but i think were getting away from the topic here. and i think the OP's question has been answered. and we are in agreement that layering is worth while ;)
=============
PS. please share some of your dodo juice with me........we cant get it here in the states yet either, an ive been wanting to try it for the past year or so......LOL, but really, your car looks great (as posted in the other thread)

and i think the OP's question has been answered. and we are in agreement that layering is worth while ;)

Well, really my (OP) question was not whether to layer, but rather should it set in shade or sun between layers, and I guess the answer seems it doesn't make a whole lot of difference.
=============
I detail my car by doing a triple layer of carnauba mothers yellow wax, no waiting is needed really. Lasts about 2 to 4 months.
=============
as i kinda said in my first post......it is product specific, some can be applied in the sun and some in the shade. personally i always do mine in the shade reguardelss of if it can be done in the sun or not.
