If you use a payroll service other than your accountant and you recommend them, please share.
If you're a sole director without any other employees and don't require a salary (either via dividends or PAYE) from your limited company, are you still required to register for PAYE after forming a company?
If you're a sole director and require a PAYE salary (not dividends), is it straightforward to use a Payroll computer application to do yourself? Wouldn't this be cheaper than using a Payroll service company? What else do they provide?

No you do not have to register for PAYE but in the past there have been some offices that automatically register ascheme for the company on formation. Practically I would always advise a sole director of a one man limited company to register if they have no income from elsewhere.

If you know what you are doing then it is straightforward if all you will be having is a monthly salary. You can use the free HMRC package or if you wished to purchase a payroll package then moneysoft has to be the one to use.

Obviously it is cheaper than using a payroll company providing that you have the time and knowledge. If you can earn more from running your business than the cost of running the payroll then use the payroll company.
If not and you currently have plenty of time then do it yourself:)

Registering for paye and using the HMRC CD-Rom to calculate the income tax and national insurance contributions would appear to be the best solution as you probably don't need a payslip. If you wish to purchase a payroll package with payslips there are suitable inexpensive options to outsourcing the payroll.

Hi

Many self employed bookkeepers offer payroll service for their usual hourly bookkeeping rate, and think a lot of bookkeepers invoice in 1/4 hourly rates, I have some clients who I do the payroll for, with varying amount of staff, with 1 staff costs 1/4 hour and as this is done from my office this includes payslips and payroll reports on A4 quality white paper, ranging to one with 20+ staff and logging onto bank to do bacs payments costs 1 hour, and I have other clients who bought Sage Financial Suite (sage instant accounts and sage payroll), and that client was happy to do his own payroll using the sage payroll just letting me know the details for the wage journal for his accounts so it can be easily learnt by a non bookkeeper or accountant.

Year end online processing, production of P60's, quarterly returns to HMRC, maintenance of the ever changing tax codes, etc etc... Sure it is always cheaper to source some software, learn how to use it and submit your year end on paper. For the sake of ?0 per month less incentives from HMRC, is it worth the effort?

If I needed a wall building I would not go out and buy some bricks :)

Why not? That is what most people use to build a wall! :D:D:D

Sorry, I could not resist that.

But Philip makes a serious point. If you want something done properly give it to someone who knows what they are doing. I would buy bricks to build a wall but I'd get someone else to build it for me. Believe me, you would not want to sit on a wall that I'd built!!

If you're full-time self employed with two businesses and wish to incorporate one of the businesses into a Ltd company and keep the other as sole trader status, is it straightforward to setup PAYE for your director salary? Any complication when it comes to filling self assement return? I'm confused as to what a tax code is as I've always been self employed.
=============
Yes straight forward.
Your salary as director would probably use up your personal tax code which is your tax free income.
You would not then receive this personal allowance against your sole trader net taxable profit

Thanks Terry I'll check it out.
