Have you no one that you know in business who already uses an Accountant? Word of mouth is by far the best was of knowing what you are getting, otherwise, have a meet, see if you like the person and even check out their testimonials etc. Don't forget this person you employ you need to form a relationship with so you are both working off the same hymm sheet.

see the sticky on this forum about how to choose an accountant - that should help

my two bob's worth.....taxassist is a franchise, so their fees include an uplift for commission payable to their parent company....anyone can become a tax assist accountant after six weeks training, (although some are already qualified accountants who want to go this route)...a lot less than it takes to qualify as a member of any of the other bodies! My take is that its only after qualifying that accountants start to learn, expierence and knowing how to deal with HMRC comes with a few years of practising. I have been called up by their marketing people as a potential client (I have my own accountancy practice so not a lot of research done there!) and they say that they have to keep up to date, well we all have to do that either as prescribed by institutes or just to keep a handle on the latest rules and not get sued!

Being an unqualified (albeit it with 30 years experience) I am not saying that you should always go with a qualified accountant as there are good and bad both sides, I suppose you should know what you want, as per the sticky, and make sure that they fit the bill. Anyway, get a quote, there's no obligation!

I am going to add one point that just ask whether they outsource thier accouting work to outside EU. I heard somewhere that all work are carried out outside EU and franchisees just review the files! and franchisee do not have a say in it.

That's news to me - certainly isn't applicable across all (if any) of the franchisees.

A lot of them are KashFlow Partners and I know from speaking to them myself and my staff dealing with them that they certainly do a lot (if not all) of their work themselves in the UK.

I went to a meeting in Grimsby at my local tax assist office. The guy I saw took some details from me (personal and business) and then sent me a letter quoting his price. I have to say I found them a little expensive and never took them up on their offer. He wanted ?00 a year plus VAT. As a sole trader, in my first year, not expecting to make a lot due to building the business up, I thought this was a little much. Instead I came on here, asked around, and got a very good deal from a user on here and lots of advice. Hope this helps.
