I posted my VAT yesterday, but have just realised I sent it to the tax office
(where I send monthly PAYE slips to) instead of the VAT office :(

Anyone else done this in the past, if so, did they forward it to the VAT
office for you, send it back, or do neither?
=============
Why don't you use on-line filing?

Ha ha ha, sorry mate but you if you think them bureaucrats, is gonna do you a favour by sending somefink on.................

Best you chase it up!!

Good luck!!

:)

I might end up paying twice if I try now

id cancel the cheque and resend it to the right place. You could ring the VAT people and explain but you risk being charged interest if they get the return late.

Ive been 1 day late, as i forgot monday was a bank holiday and nearly got charged. They seem to let you off the first time. I did it again, and they charged me....
=============
LOL you'll bring the system to its knees!

Just give them a call they'll either sort it or tell you what to do.
=============
I presume that this is the return for the period to 31 August?

That being the case, it's not late yet. I'd send a copy of the return to the VAT Central Unit now so it arrives Monday or Tuesday. You could put a stop on the original cheque and issue a new one.

If this is the first time that you've been late, there won't be any penalty even if you don't get the return in on time. You'll be shown a yellow card, and if you are late again within 12 months they will charge you a penalty of 2% of the tax due.

If you are normally on time, that won't cause you a problem. If you have had previous "troubles" then you might want to claim reasonable excuse- do this now because excuses made in advance are always better than those made after the event. Don't forget that they've heard every excuse that you can imagine, and then some!

Weekends have given me nightmares in the past, i think ive used up all my 'i forgot it was a bank holiday monday' excuse. Anyone got some ideas of excuses?

That sounds like a chargeable service to me! ;)

I've been late a couple of times before and are already on a 12 month warning :(

I've just found a copy form, so will post that this morning, ring them on
Monday and hope they don't cash both cheques.

UKSBD ...... me thinks you need to get a bit more organised ;) :D
=============
You sound like my accountant :)

Stupid thing is, as I was posting it I thought it was strange it was in a white
envelope this time. It was only when clearing my desk last night and finding
the right envelope, that I realised what I had done.

Last time I was late was over Christmas, was driving around with it in my
car for about a week, had forgotten to post it :(

Maybe you have not done it wrong then - since the August returns, they are now white return envelopes - not brown!
=============
Thanks, I think :redface:

Now I don't know what to do.
Don't know if I have sent it to the right place or not.
=============
Well if the envelope that you still have is addressed to VAT Controller, VAT Central Unit, BX5 5AT - then I suspect you have sent it to the wrong place!

If you no longer have that white envelope - then I suspect you sent it to the right place.
=============
The brown one which I still have, is addressed to Alexander House, Southend
(don't know how old the envelope is though)

I didn't notice where the white one was addressed to, but it was similar
to the ones I send my PAYE returns to.

Are everbodies VAT envelopes white now?
=============
Looks like I may be OK after all,

My brown envelope must be an old one
