Hi everyone
Am after a quick bit of feedback for telemarketing campaign that I am doing for an accountant selling payroll services on price. She is looking to charge ? per employee per month for minimum of ?0 per month. Is that in line with the going rate? No extra charge for year end filing.
Thanks a lot :)

There are usually quite a few more variables that effect the price such as frequency (Weekly, monthly) and the format (How the data will be presented and any caluclations involved).
?40 for 4 employees is quite competitive if including ALL year end filing. =============
?40 does sound like a very competitive price as it includes the year end filing.
From research I did some bookkeepers charge their normal hourly rate whether it bookkeeping work or payroll so this could easily be more than the ?40 a year you mentioned.

Hi
I am a bookkeeper offering payroll services, I charge ?5+vat per payroll period for up to 9 employees, then ?0+vat per payroll period.
I also charge a year end fee of ?0 - ?5 + vat, but as I file online these fees have been more than covered by the ILEA incentive to my clients.:) =============
I used to pay my accountant ?00+vat per month for approximately 20-25 employees but he eventually dropped out saying that it was not cost effective, so on that basis starting at ? per employee seems reasonable. =============
? per employee per month is very cheap. I do payroll for 25 people, so that would be ?25.
Doing it properly, it takes approximately a full day to do (monthly payroll).
BUT...then you have the end year payroll to do, id charge seperatly for that. Filing online is pretty quick, if your software is up to it. But obviously you need to check things etc. Also keeping tabs on holidays / sick / spp / smp etc
Id charge then an hourly rate, based on 8 hours for that....?0 x 8 = ?40 per month
So id double it, to make it worth while, and charge a couple of hundred for the annual payroll return. =============
Forgive the ignorance of the question, but what constitutes doing it properly or improperly? Ie why would I pay someone to spend a day on it when someone else would key all the numbers into a piece of software and print out all the documents in thirty minutes? =============

That works out at about 20 minutes per employee
If you are providing a payroll bureau service at this speed, I cannot see how it could be commercially viable.
We also charge ? per employee, and I would be very disappointed if my payroll department had not fully processed a 25-person payroll, e-mailed the payslips, run the reports etc in an hour - and probably much quicker. =============
We can't be doing it properly either. It would be interesting to know what PhillipH considers to be doing it properly so that we can see where we're going wrong. =============

Just hammering in the monthly timesheets isnt doing it properly. I could do that and do it in 1/5th of the time but there would be mistakes.
Want the client to then discover your paying people wrong?
To be honest, i think you took me too literally. I just meant doing all the odds and ends. Employee is sick, work out any SSP, employee wants to go on paternity leave (male) - is he eligible etc etc
A few years ago I was a book-keeper (yes i know things change) and had about 20 clients. Ranging from a couple of employees to 50. The least I charged was ?00 per month. Doing payroll for someone for (100 x 12) = 1200 per year to me isnt bad. I just did it as a sideline and never had any complaints about charging. They want excellent customer service then they pay for it.
Well anyway, Im no expert in payroll charges, if my suggested charges are out of this world then ignore my posts. But im pretty sure i wouldnt do it for less. =============
None of our users can be doing it properly either. Clearly they can't possibly be expected to handle statutory absence payments themselves. A pity the software they're using doesn't have all the HMRC rules for SxP encoded into it so that all they have to do is answer the same questions into the software their bureau/accountant would ask them... oh wait... it does do that, :D to a higher degree of accuracy and with more knowledge of the requirements/exceptions than most specialists. And it never forgets to check any of the rules either.
No evidence that any of our clients are paying their employees the wrong amount because they "banged in the timesheets too quickly". Oddly enough people find it pretty easy to get this stuff right in a few minutes/week or /month themselves. Usually less time than it takes to prepare the information into an acceptable form for the external "expert". =============
Whats wrong with you people? Where did I say any of you wernt doing it properly?
You dont like my suggestion of how much to charge, fine. But there is no need for this cockiness. =============
You are the one that said that it took a full day to do the payroll "properly", which is a clear implication that people who take less time aren't. =============

Right well, you got that from this statement i made:
Doing it properly, it takes approximately a full day to do (monthly payroll).
So automatically thats accusing people who take less time are doing it wrong?
Seriously....i have nothing more to say about that.
But getting back to what the OP originally asked:

yes its cheap, you should have no problems getting clients for him. =============
Thanks everyone. It helps when I get on the phone next week to have a general feeling for how competitive she is with her pricing.
It might help that she is using 12pay to do it :) so no worries there Tom she is a big fan! =============
