Hello! I know I'm up obscenely late, but my favourite business advisor (mum) is an insomniac.
The idea is for me to launch a couple of websites in my "home" country - Kenya. All well and dandy, except that in order to buy a .co.ke name, you must have a physical presence in the country. I'm guessing this is a PO Box, or an office address.
I am in Birmingham. I could run both websites from over here with no problems. Mother dearest and my stepfather reckon that the reason I need a physical presence is for income tax purposes - the Kenyan government may be horrendously corrupt, but it is very efficient at sending out the auditors on any businesses that look slightly profitable.
According to the parents, at the moment it's impossible to get a business off the ground unless you register for a VAT number. But as far as I'm concerned, I don't expect either of these websites to earn any money in their first year of operation, and that's being optimistic! So I'm slightly down on the idea of shelling out money for something that I don't actually need.
Anyway, my questions for the sages and gurus here are:
1) Whether there is a double-taxation agreement with Kenya, or whether I'd be stung twice
2) If the situation isn't clear, would I have to separate my Kenyan-generated revenues from those from elsewhere (there are a lot of Kenyans in the diaspora)?
3) Does anyone run a foreign website from the UK, and what major difficulties have they had?
Personally, I think my mum would be thrilled if I convinced MrPixie to sell up the house and start a new life below the equator with me, but quite frankly, the exchange rate doesn't make it worth it at the moment. =============
